Sree Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple Malaysia

Sree Maha Mariamman Devasthanam Temple in Butterworth is a famous Goddess Amman temple located in Bagan Luar in Penang state of Malaysia. The temple is biggest and probably oldest Hindu temple in Butterworth. The temple is for the Hindu community that dwells along Jalan Jeti Lama and the area within the vicinity is a Hindu settlement called Kampung Benggali. The temple build in Dravidian style of architecture is well known for the impressive temple Gopuram which stands high over the buildings in the vicinity.

The Maha Mariamman Temple Butterworth was constructed in 1853. The idol of Goddess Amman or Ambal was found by the seaside and a small hut was built consecutively to place the goddess idol for worship. The first Kumbabishegam (consecration ceremony) took place in 1903 after a devotee named Ponnusami Pillai constructed a temple on the same spot for goddess worship. Many renovations took place since then and the current Maha Mariamman Temple structure was constructed in 1980 and the Kumbabishegam performed in 1988.

How to Reach

Butterworth Maha Mariamman Temple is situated along Jalan Jeti Lama, an old road off Jalan Bagan Luar. Devotees can see the Butterworth Outer Ring Road behind it. The goddess temple lies on a small road known as Jalan Tokong Lama.
