Vastu Shastra and its Origin

Vastu Shastra is an ancient traditional architectural science developed in India. It deals with the architectural and engineering needs of any structure. Vasthu Shastra presents a number of tips and techniques that not only helps us build a beautiful home but one that makes us really comfortable and peaceful. Vaasthu Shastra is also referred to as Vastu Veda, Vastu Vidya, Thachu Shastra, Thatchu Shasthra. Vasthushastra is based on five energies or Pancha Bhoota and they are Earth, Water, Fire, Air, and Space. These energies are very strong and they have a placement in the mythological science and are also referred to Navagraha or nine planets. Vasthu believes that energies are placed in each corner. The importance of directions is very low because they basically are more influential in guiding temperament of an individual.

Origin of Vastu Shastra

“Vasthu” is derived from the word ‘Vas’ that means to dwell. Vasthu means Earth and Shastra means science. The origin of Vasthu Shastra is in Stapatya Veda from Adharva Veda. It is the science of all “matter and energy” and “time and space” in the universe and its use of creating dwellings, temples, forts, monumental structures and even vehicles. The science of Vasthu was written and developed by several sages, saints and rishis.

The eighteen saints were said to be prominent among all other Vasthu scientists in sacred text Matsya Purana. They are Bhrigu, Athri, Vashishta, Vishwakarma, Maya, Narada, Nagna Jittu, Vishalaksha, Purandhara, Brahma, Kumara, Nandeshwara, Shounaka, Garg, Vaasudeva, Anirudha, Sukra and Bruhaspathi. The ancient rishis are Agathya, Valmiki, Kashyapa, Kathyayana, Mareechi, Manu, Markondeya, Mandana Suthradhara and Bharadwaja. The city of Dwaraka was built by one of the chief architect Viswa karma according to Vaasthu principles. The other architect who built forts for demon kings was Maya.
