Dhantrayodashi - Dhanteras 2023 November 10

Dhantrayodashi or Dhanteras is the first day of 5 day Diwali festival. As per Hindu Calendar, it falls on the thirteenth lunar day of Krishna Paksha. The word Dhantrayodashi means - Dhana for wealth and Trayodashi is the 13th day of Krishna Paksha. In 2023, Dhantrayodashi falls on 10  November .

Dhantrayodashi 

There are several myths related with the celebration of Dhanteras. It is believed that on this day, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during Samudra Madan. Goddess Lakshmi along with Lord Kubera is worshipped on this auspicious day for the wellbeing and prosperity.

The day is also observed as Dhanvantri Jayanti. It is the birth anniversary of Lord Dhanvantari the father of Ayurveda. Dhanvantari emerged with a pot of nectar during the churning of ocean. He is regarded as one of the incarnations of Lord Vishnu.

Yama Deepam is the lamp lit outside home on Trayodashi to ward off any untimely death of any family members. It is believed that by lighting lamp pleases the God of death and he will protect the family members.
