Dashas in Hindu Astrology. Vimsottari Maha Dasa is the popularly followed Dasha system used in Indian astrology. According to this Dasa system, the position of the moon (Chandra) at the time of birth is important for calculating the Vimsottari Mahadasa. For example, if a person is born on Krittika, Uttara Phalguni (uttara) or Uttara Ashadha nakshatra then the Nakshatra God is Surya. And the person’s dasha will start with Surya Dasa.

In Sanskrit language, Vimshottari means "120" and in Jyotish, Vimshottari Dasha assumes that the maximum duration of life of an individual human being is 120 years. Below is the he length of each Graha Dasha period .

Chandra Dasha (Moon) - 10 Years
Chowai Dasha (Mars) - 7 Years

Rahu Dasha - 18 Years
