Manakula Vinayagar Temple Puducherry

Manakula Vinayagar Temple is one of the famous ancient Hindu Ganesha temples located at Puducherry (Pondicherry) in Tamil Nadu. The temple is located 35 km east of Viluppuram. The primary deity worshipped here is Lord Ganapathy in the form of Manakula Vinayagar or Pranavamurthy.

Significance of Manakula Vinayagar Temple

Manakula Ganesha Temple faces east. According to legends, Lord Ganapathy is named in 16 types based on his various forms out, in which the God facing the east coast near Bay of Bengal is named as Bhuvaneshar Ganapathy or Manakula Vinayagar. In Tamil language the word 'Manal' means sand and 'Kulam' means pond. So the people called the God as Manal Kulathu Vinayagar. Later this temple was named as Manakula Vinayagar Temple. This is a popular pilgrimage site and also tourist destination in Puducherry.

Manakula Vinayagar Temple Festival


The annual Brahmostavam festival at Manakula Vinayaka Temple is the major festival celebrated for 24 days during the month of August and September.

Temple Timings 

The temple morning timings are from 05:45 am to 12:30 pm. The evening timings are from 04.00 pm to 09:30 pm.  The timings are subject to change during Festival days and Holidays.

The main attraction here is a Golden Chariot. The Golden Chariot was made purely on the basis of collection of donations from the devotees. The total weight of the gold used in this chariot is about 7.5 kg with the estimate of around Rs. 30 to 35 lakhs.
