Arulmigu Papanatha Swamy Temple is the first among the nine Navakailasam temples of Lord Shiva. The presiding deity of the temple is Papanasanathar and his consort Parvathi as Ulagammai. The image of Papanasanathar in the form of Lingam is housed in the sanctum and of of Ulagammai is housed in a west facing shrine. Here Nataraja is routed in Ananda Thandava posture and is also called as Punugu Sabapathy. The shrine also houses the images of Vinayaka, Subramanyar, Dakshinamurthy, Durga, and Navagrahas on the walls.

Significance of Papanasanathar Temple of Shiva

Of the nine Kailash Kshetras, Papanasam Temple is the first attributed to Sun God. The temple is also known as Surya Kshetra and Surya Kailash. Papanasam literally means Destruction of Sins. It is believed that a dip in the  Tamiraparani River in front of the temple and worshiping Lord Papanasanathar will help to get rid of any sins. The temple has seven-tiered gateway tower. A granite wall surrounding the temple encloses all its shrines.

Papanasam Temple Timings and Festival

The temple is open from 06:00 am to 01:00 pm and 04:00 pm to 08:30 pm on all days except during festival days and last Friday when it is opened full day; ie 06:00 am to 08:00 pm.

The temple celebrates three important festivals annually - Brahmotsavam festival, Thaipoosam and Annual festival. Brahmmotsavam is celebrated for 10 days. Every year Therthiruvizha and Toppathiruvizha has also been celebrated very grandly.
