Parashurameshvara Temple Bhubaneswar Odisha

Parashurameshvara Temple in Bhubaneswar is one of the oldest existing temples in Odisha state of India. The temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva is  a best preserved specimen of an early Orissan Hindu temple dated to the Shailodbhava period. The temple structure comprises of a curving tower over the sanctuary and an adjoining mandapa with two horizontal roof tiers. The sanctuary enshrines a Shivalinga, but no statue of Nandi on the grounds. This temple has a vimana, a sanctum, and a bada. This is the first temple to have an additional structure called jagamohana.  Parashurameshvara temple is a protected monument maintained by by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

Significance of Parsurameswar Temple Odisha


Parashurameshvara Temple represents Mahadev as  the lord of Parashurama. The temple is the first in Bhubaneswar to contain depictions of Saptamatrikas named Chamunda, Varahi, Shivani, Indrani, Kaumari, Vaishnavi and Brahmi. The temple also contains sculpted images of Shakta deities. The temple contains six-armed Mahishamardini image, Lord Vishnu, Lord Indra, Lord Surya and Lord Yama in the rectangular niches around the base of the porch. A sculpture of Kartikeya riding on his peacock vehicle is present on the southern wall. Other noteworthy carvings are those of Shiva subduing the demon-king Ravana, who is seen trying to uproot Mount Kailasa. Shiva is sculpted as Nataraja in various tandavas in the temple.

Parashurameshvara Temple Festival


Parashurashtami is the major festival celebrated in the temple during the month of June - July every year. The festival is held on the 8th day of Ashadha month. During the festival the idol of Lingaraj Temple is taken to Parashurameshvara Temple and feasted.

The temple is one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the state of Odisha. This Temple was built by the Shailodbhavas, who had Shiva as their family deity. The Shailodbhavas also respected the Shakta deities and depicted Shakta images on the walls of the temple as well.
