Important Sikh Gurdwaras in Pushkar, in the Ajmer district of Rajasthan, India. According to Gurmukh Singh, Pushkar holds great significance for Sikhs as well. It is home to Gurdwaras dedicated to Guru Nanak and Guru Gobind Singh, both of which have deep historical roots.
Famous Sikh Gurdwaras in Puskhar
The Guru Nanak Gurdwara, also known as Guru Nanak Dharamsala, is located in the eastern part of the town and was commonly referred to as such before the 20th century. This Sikh Dharamshala is a two-storeyed building that consists of a central room surrounded by a verandah.
The second Sikh temple is dedicated to Guru Gobind Singh, commemorating his visit after leaving Anandpur Sahib. During this visit, Pandit Parmanand, representing Hindu kings, took an oath on the holy cow, while Qazi Syyed Wali Hassan, a Muslim priest, took an oath on the Quran, which was handwritten by Aurangzeb. They promised that if Guru ji left Anandpur Sahib, he would not be attacked, and everyone could peacefully leave Anandpur Sahib. The place where Guru ji stayed, along with the adjacent lakefront, is now known as Gobind Ghat.
This shrine bears a memorial inscription and was constructed with the support of the Maratha Empire, following the Hindu-Muslim conflicts during the final years of Aurangzeb's rule and the decline of the Mughal Empire.
Within the shrine, there is an ancient hand-written copy of the Sikh scripture, the Guru Granth Sahib, as well as a hukumnama believed to have been written by Guru Gobind Singh. These precious artifacts have been preserved by a Pushkar Brahmin priest, who is a descendant of the priest that the Guru encountered. The hukumnama is inscribed on a bhoj patra, a method of recording letters commonly used in the 18th century.
