Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple Thiruchitrambalam, Thanjavur

Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple Thiruchitrambalam

Though Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple is a Shiva Temple, yet due to the spiritual significance of Lord Vinayaka present here, this temple is more famously known as “Miracle Ganesha Temple”, or “Fortune Ganesha Temple”, since whoever submits flowers onto the ears of Lord Vinayaka, it would go inside the ears of Vinayaka, if their wishes are going to be fulfilled, or otherwise, the flowers inserted onto the ears of Vinayaka would come out, and would fall down.

It is one of the popular shrines which was sung by Nayanmar Saints like Sundarar. The temple is located a few kms far away from Pattukkottai, and few buses are regularly plying between Thanjavur and Kumbakonam, to reach this temple.  The chief deity in the sanctum sanctorium, is known as Sri Puradhanavaneswarar, and his consort, is known as Ma Periyanayaki Amman. An idol of Lord Vinayaka is present in the shrine of Periyanayaki Ambal.

The temple is good in architecture. Two temple tanks are present near the temple. Temple inscription of Chola, Pandya and Vijayanagara Kings looks very attractive and admirable.

Story of Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple

As per ancient legend, once Lord Shiva had undergone rigorous meditation at the present place of the temple, while Lord Manmatha, also known as Kamadeva, the love god, had tried to disturb his meditation and finally he was burnt into ashes by Lord Shiva. However, after the request of Manmatha’s wife Ma Rathi Devi, he was later restored back to life by Lord Shiva at Thiruchittrambalam.

This temple is also famously known as Lord Manmadha Yama Dharmaraja Temple.

Puradhana Vaneswarar Temple Festivals

Mahasivaratri festival is celebrated nicely at this temple. It is believed that those who observe fasting during Shivaratri night at this temple, would be relieved from their death related fears. In ancient time, annual float festival was being held at this temple. At that time, the chief deity Lord Puradhanavaneswarar would be kept on the float.

Devotees mainly used to visit this temple in order to test their fortune with Lord Vinayaka, who is the fortune teller of the devotees, and those who have staunch faith on him, would surely have a bright future in their lives, and they would be freed from their sins and diseases. In future, I am also planning to visit this temple, in order to know about my future, since I am very much scared about it!
