What is Chithirai Thiruvizha?

Chithirai Thiruvizha is one of the biggest and most vibrant festivals celebrated in Madurai, Tamil Nadu. It takes place in the Tamil month of Chithirai (April–May) and is centered around the famous Meenakshi Amman Temple.

This festival beautifully combines divine wedding celebrations and celestial journeys.

Why is Chithirai Thiruvizha Celebrated?

The festival celebrates two major divine events:

Meenakshi Thirukalyanam

The celestial wedding of Goddess Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswarar

Symbolizes divine union, prosperity, and harmony.

Alagar Festival (Azhagar Aatril Ezhuntharulal)

Lord Kallazhagar (an avatar of Vishnu) travels from Alagar Kovil to Madurai to attend his sister Meenakshi’s wedding.
