Krishna and the Lifting of Govardhan Parvat
In the sacred land of Gokul, a significant event unfolded that revealed the divine wisdom and power of Lord Krishna.
One day, Mata Yashoda and the women of Gokul were busy preparing for a grand yagna dedicated to Indra Dev. They gathered fruits, food, and various offerings to please Indra, believing that he would bless their village with timely rains.
Curious, young Krishna approached his mother and asked about the preparations. Yashoda explained that the yagna was meant to honor Indra, the god responsible for rain.
Krishna’s Divine Insight
Krishna, with his divine understanding, gently questioned this practice. He explained that instead of worshipping Indra, the villagers should offer their gratitude to Govardhan Parvat. He reasoned that the mountain provided them with fertile land, grass for their cattle, and protection making it more directly beneficial to their lives.
His words were persuasive, and soon the people of Gokul agreed. They redirected their devotion and performed rituals in honor of Govardhan Parvat instead of Indra.
Indra’s Wrath
When Indra learned that the villagers had stopped worshipping him, he was enraged. Blinded by pride, he unleashed heavy rains, thunderstorms, and violent winds upon Gokul. The downpour was relentless, flooding the village and spreading fear among the people.
Terrified, the villagers turned to Nanda for guidance.
Krishna Lifts Govardhan Parvat
At that moment, Krishna reassured everyone and guided them to seek shelter near Govardhan Parvat. Then, in a miraculous act, he lifted the entire mountain with his little finger, holding it like an umbrella over the villagers.
Men, women, children, and cattle gathered safely beneath the mountain, protected from the storm. Krishna held the mountain steadily for seven days and nights, ensuring everyone’s safety.
Indra Realizes His Mistake
Witnessing this extraordinary sight, Indra was astonished. He realized that the young boy was none other than an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. Overcome with regret, Indra stopped the rains and approached Krishna to seek forgiveness.
A Lesson in Humility
Krishna forgave Indra but reminded him of an important truth: power and authority should never lead to arrogance. Instead, they must be used for the welfare of others. Indra understood his mistake and vowed to act with humility.

Power and position should never be misused. True greatness lies in humility and serving others.
