How is Hanuman Considered the Son of Lord Shiva?
Introduction
Anjana and Kesari's Desire for a Child
Anjana, a celestial apsara who was born on Earth as a female monkey, was married to the mighty monkey king Kesari. Although they enjoyed a happy married life, they remained childless for many years. Anjana was deeply saddened by this, and Kesari found it difficult to comfort her.
Seeking divine intervention, the couple decided to worship Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati. They observed strict spiritual disciplines, ate only one meal a day, and constantly chanted the sacred Panchakshari mantra, "Om Namah Shivaya." Their devotion remained unwavering for a long period.
The Divine Test
Pleased by their sincere prayers, Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati decided to test the couple's faith. They assumed the forms of monkeys and appeared near Anjana and Kesari's home.
The divine monkeys playfully took away the fruits that had been arranged for worship. When Kesari complained about the mischievous act, Anjana suggested that the monkeys might actually be Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in disguise, testing their devotion. Instead of becoming angry, the couple began praying to the monkeys as well.
The Heavenly Message
Soon, a divine voice echoed through the heavens:
"Anjana and Kesari, we are pleased with your devotion. Deep within the forest stands a special mango tree. Go there and continue your prayers while circling the tree. In a few days, you will receive a divine fruit. By consuming it, Anjana will be blessed with a son of extraordinary strength and speed who will become famous throughout the world."
Filled with hope, Anjana and Kesari journeyed into the forest and found the sacred tree. Every day they performed their prayers with complete faith and dedication.
The Divine Fruit
After seven days of worship, a heavenly voice instructed them to prepare themselves. A radiant fruit descended from the tree, glowing with divine light.
When Anjana asked who had bestowed the fruit, the voice replied:
"I am Vayu, the Wind God. This fruit contains the divine essence of Lord Shiva along with my own power. When Kesari receives it and gives it to you, his strength will also become part of it."
Kesari accepted the fruit and offered it to Anjana. She ate the sacred fruit and soon became pregnant.
Birth of Hanuman
In due course, Anjana gave birth to a remarkable child who possessed immense strength, wisdom, courage, and the speed of the wind. This divine child was Hanuman.
Because the fruit carried the divine essence of Lord Shiva, Hanuman is often regarded as the spiritual son or incarnation of Lord Shiva. Since Vayu, the Wind God, played a vital role in his birth and empowered him with divine energy, Hanuman is also known as Vayuputra, meaning "Son of the Wind God."
Kesari, who lovingly raised him, is recognized as his earthly or foster father.
Why Hanuman is Called Shiva's Son
Hanuman is associated with three fatherly figures:
- Lord Shiva – His divine and original father, whose essence was present in the sacred fruit.
- Vayu (Wind God) – His spiritual father who delivered the divine energy and blessed him with extraordinary speed and strength.
- Kesari – His earthly father who nurtured and raised him.
Thus, Hanuman is revered as a divine manifestation of Lord Shiva, blessed by Vayu, and lovingly brought up by Kesari.
The birth of Hanuman is a powerful story of faith, devotion, and divine grace. Through the unwavering prayers of Anjana and Kesari, the blessings of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, and Vayu culminated in the birth of one of Hinduism's greatest heroes. Hanuman continues to inspire millions through his devotion, humility, courage, and selfless service.
