Mannarasala Ayilyam Festival 2023 November 6

Mannarasala Ayilyam is the main festival celebrated at the famous Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple located in the Alappuzha district of Kerala, India. Mannarasala Temple is an ancient and internationally known pilgrimage center dedicated to Lord Nagaraja, the Serpent God of Hindus. In 2023, the date of Mannarasala Aayilyam is 6th November, Monday. 

Mannarasala Ayilyam Festival Details

Mannarasala Aayilyam is celebrated on the Malayalam month of Thulam (October – November) every year. On the day of Ayilyam nakshatram all the serpent idols of the temple and the grove is taken in procession to the Mannarasala Illam (Brahmin’s house connected with the temple) where the Nurum Palum (rice flour and milk), Kuruthi and cooked rice are made. As part of the ritual, the oldest female family member of the temple, known as Mannarasala Amma, will carry the idol of Nagaraja when the temple Ezhunnallathu is conducted.

Signifiance of Mannarasala Temple

Mannarasala Nagaraja Temple is famous for the Uruli Kamazhthal ritual performed by devotees. This is a ritual performed by women seeking fertility. A vessel named Uruli made of Gold, Silver, brass or bronze is offered for performing ‘Nurum Palum’ ceremony. Upon birth of their child the devotee must visit the shrine again for thanksgiving ceremonies. Mannarasala Snake Temple is also known for having more than 30,000 idols of snake-gods along the paths and among the trees in the temple compound.

Mannarasala is located 3 km from Haripad and 32 km from Alappuzha.

Haripad Railway Station (3 km), Mavelikkara Railway Station (10 km), and Kayamkulam Railway Station (11 km) are the nearest railheads to reach Mannarasala.

Cochin International Airport (115 km) and Thiruvananthapuram International Airport (125 km) are the nearest airports to reach the temple.
