Thaipusam is dedicated to Lord Murugan, the Hindu god of war, and is a time for devotees to express their devotion and seek blessings. One of the distinctive features of Thaipusam is the kavadi, a ceremonial offering carried by devotees during a pilgrimage to Murugan temples.

The kavadi is often a structure adorned with various ornaments, pots of milk, and peacock feathers, symbolizing both the burden of sins and gratitude for answered prayers. Devotees undergo various acts of penance, including fasting and piercing their bodies with hooks and skewers, as acts of self-mortification to demonstrate their dedication and seek divine favor.

Thaipusam is marked by elaborate processions, rhythmic music, and a lively atmosphere. In addition to the physical challenges undertaken by devotees, there are also communal aspects, including the preparation and sharing of food among the participants and spectators. The festival highlights the strength of faith, the endurance of the human spirit, and the cultural richness of the Tamil community.
