Astabandhana Maha Kumbabhishekam at Madurai Meenakshi Temple

The world famous Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple or Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple is conducting the “Astabandhana Maha Kumbabhishekam” and “Maha Samprokshanam” in April 2009. Maha Kumbabhishekam is a Hindu temple ritual which is performed once in every 12 years according to the Shastras to remove all inauspiciousness and increase the prosperity and peace of the temple and the country. In 2009, the Mahakumbabhishekam is conducted on Wednesday from 09:00 am to 10:00 am on 8th April 2009.

Madurai Meenakshi Amman Temple enshrines a total of 454 large and small deities. The Kumbabhishekam for a large number of smaller ‘sannidhis’ (Parivara Murthies) will be conducted on 6th April 2009. And the Kumbabhishekam for the principal sannidhis and gopurams will be conducted on April 8. On 8th April at 9:15 am Astabandhana Maha Samprokshanam and Kumbabishekam will be performed for all the major towers of Madurai Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple and at 9.30 Kumbabhishekam will be performed on the Meenakshi Amman Tower. Kumbabhishekam will be performed on the Sri Sundareswarar Swamy Tower at 9.45 am.

According to the temple authorities, the sanctum sanctorum of the Arulmigu Meenakshi Sundareswarar Temple will remain closed from 2nd April 2009 to 7th April 2009. On these days, the devotees are allowed to worship at the Yagasala located in the North Aadi Street.
