Story of Makaradhwaja Son of Hanuman

Story of Makaradhwaja, son of Hanuman. According to Hinduism, Makaradhwaja is the son of Lord Hanuman. Makardhwaja makes his first appearance in epic Ramayana. The story of Makardhwaja and Hanuman has several versions.

Legend has it that after destroying Lanka with the fire burning on his tail, Lord Hanuman took a dip in the waters of sea. A drop of his perspiration fell in to the mouth of a mighty fish. From this Makaradhvaja was born. This is one version. Another, slightly different version is that when Hanuman took a dip in the sea, a drop of his seed got discharged, which fell in to the mouth of a giant fish-cum-reptile like creature, making it pregnant. The child born was Makaradhwaja.

When Makardhwaj was grown up, once Ahiravana, who ruled Patala, the nether-world, saw him. Ahiravan, also called Mahiravan, was a brother of Ravana.  Ahiravana was attracted by the strength and virility of Makaradhvaja. Ahiravana made him the guard of the gates of his Kingdom. In the battle between Srirama and Ravana, Ravana’s son Indrajit was killed. Ravana sought the help of his brother Ahiravana who promised to kill Srirama and Lakshmana. Vibhishana somehow managed to hear about the plot and warned Lord Rama about the same. Hanuman was authorized to guard the room where Srirama and Lakshmana were. Ahiravana made many attempts to enter the room, but all of them were defeated by Hanuman. Finally, Ahiravana took the form of Vibhishana and Hanuman allowed him to enter. Ahiravana quickly entered and took the “sleeping Srirama and Lakshmana” away.

Makaradhwaja Son of Hanuman

Ahiravana reached Patala. He consulted his friends and decided to sacrifice the life of the two brothers at the altar of his chosen deity, goddess Mahamaya. On knowing this, Hanuman rushed to Patala. He was challenged at the gate of Patala by Makaradhvaja. He was a true servant of Ahiravana and he would not betray his master. Actually Ahiravana did not know who the opponent was.

Makaradhwaja claimed that he was the son of Hanuman. Hanuman was amused at this and said that he himself was Hanuman, but he could not be his son, as he was born celibate. A duel between Hanuman and Makaradhvaja took place. Hanuman defeated Makaradhvaja in the duel and proceeded further. Finally, Hanuman killed Ahiravana and rescued Srirama and Lakshmana.

Later, on the advice of Srirama, Hanuman installed Makaradhvaja, as the King of Patala and all the three returned to Lanka, to continue the war with Ravana.
